"Midrash" (מדרשׁ) means to "study" and "seek," or “inquire with care." It is a way of engaging with timely questions and addressing new socio-cultural realities that may not be explicitly or specifically addressed in scripture (and therefore won't come up very often in a sermon series). "Midweek Midrash" is a periodic, Wednesday night discussion aimed at growing a very under-utilized spiritual muscle: biblical wisdom. By deepening our understanding of how we are culturally shaped and spiritually formed, we will be better equipped and prepared to navigate a rapidly changing world with unchanging truth.
Our first topic for midrash-ing: "How should Christians view the act of voting in an election?" This won't be about pushing an agenda, telling you who or what to vote for, or try to cover a biblical understanding of politics as a whole. Instead, this will be narrowly focused on how to think wisely about what voting IS, in general, and how to approach voting as faithful and discerning Christians when it seems like every election is more polarizing than the last.
If there is anywhere we should be able to have a humble, sane, and truth-with-love conversation to wrestle with what it means to live first and foremost as citizens of heaven, and secondarily as citizens of this country, it is within and among the Body of Christ.
